Hello!
Palladium Books will be featuring an article of mine, “Rifts® Karimyo, Pecos Empire” in their upcoming issue of the Rifter! It describes a small community within the Mad Max-style wasteland of the post-apocalyptic southwestern US in the age of Rifts. Here’s a link to the pre-order page; keep your eyes peeled for its release!
More updates to come, but as ever I am very busy with various projects at the moment. When I have something to report, I guarantee that I’ll post it here before anywhere else!
Is it almost the end of 2015 already? There’s only 5 Mondays left in until 2016, which is some small mercy considering the black hole of pain and suffering every single one seems to become for most of us. Now that my forehead is sore from bashing it against the wall trying to pound out a few thousand words, the fruits of a long night of writing and a much longer day of working the day job, I feel like now’s as good a time as any for some updates here.
For anyone in the Toronto area (or willing to take a road trip/international flight) who’s interested, my favourite downtown nerd shop the Hairy Tarantula is having their Autumn Sale!
Although I haven’t had a chance to examine their inventory lately as I’m currently enjoying the un-sunshine here in beautiful Vancouver, Hairy T usually carries Palladium Books products and may still have copies of The Rifter #64 or #66, both of which contain short fiction by yours truly!
RPG books are 40% off according to the discount list, so feel free to drop by and grab one for almost half price – and if they’re all out, make sure to demand more Brett Caron fiction! I’m not advocating public nudity in every situation that may arise, but I guarantee they’ll remember you if you take your pants off.
Cheers.
The new post I hinted at a short while ago has arrived. I’ll repost it on this blog eventually, but for now you can find it on the Huffington Post here. It’s a heroic tale of man vs. meat, replete with bad decisions and unflappable willpower.
In other news, Palladium Books’ The Rifter #66 (containing a short story by me, Skipping Stones) will be shipping soon! You can order it from their online store here.
I’ll be updating soon with new developments, maybe some more writing exercises from my adoptive group here in Vancouver. I’ve verified that they are indeed legitimate writers because we all procrastinate like champions. Keep an eye out, but don’t hold your breath!
I’m happy to announce that my short story “Skipping Stones” will be featured in the next issue of Palladium Books’ The Rifter!
It’s great to be working with Palladium again, especially so since I can continue a series following the adventures of Happy Ending Solutions. They’re a lot of fun to write. Palladium has such a rich playground of a universe already, and I’m happy to be contributing to it.
Check out the pre-order on their website here. Order now or check it out at your local tabletop or comic store! (If it smells nerdy, they probably have it.)
Also, an article written by me is now live on the Huffington Post under the title “There’s No Shame in Shaming An Asshole.” I’ll be reposting it to this blog over the weekend, but for now you can enjoy it here.
More updates and work are coming, stay tuned!
Detroit Fanfare
I had a great time attending the 2013 Detroit Fanfare convention in Michigan this past weekend. I got to meet some heroes, both personal and fictional, as well as more than a few truly interesting sights and events.
Some thank you’s are in order:
Billy West, for his kind words and inspiration. It’s good to know that I’m not the only artist who was a terrible student in school.
John DiMaggio and Maurice Lamarche, for being awesome and taking time to indulge a fanboy in brief conversation. Maurice said that he was glad that the Brain and Animaniacs had such an impact on my generation, and John was surprised to hear that I was gushing more for his portrayal of the Joker in Under the Red Hood than his work on Futurama and Adventure Time.
Kevin Siembiedia and the rest of the Palladium crew! Not only were they warm and welcoming, but offered some great feedback on new works I’m developing for them. Kevin was kind enough to run a game of Palladium Fantasy that I was lucky enough to take part in, and I had a blast! Wayne Smith and Matthew Clements were both very good to meet as well, and I look forward to working with them in the future. Last but not least, Chuck Walton and I jived on pretty much everything from style to substance, and neither of us can wait to see what the other does next – particularly more works of ours that overlap!
Finally, Mr. Mort Castle. After enjoying his panel (along with The Walking Dead’s Jay Bonansigna) on writing horror, I was lucky enough to chat with him for a few minutes. Expect a future post detailing some of the pertinent notes from that panel, including some direct quotes from him and Jay!
Movember
I’ll be participating in the not-so-ancient ritual of Movember this year! Not only that, but I’ll actually be trying to raise money for the cause, so you can find my online profile for Movember Canada here.
I intend to post a couple of updates on this per week, so expect some shaven-going-stubbly photos in the next few days. I’ll be chronicling not only the resurgence of facial hair, but also what it feels like to go from beard to nothing at all and back again. Well, from nothing to 70’s porn star calling card, anyway.
Stay tuned!
Brett
There’s a bit to cover this update, so I’ll get right to it.
First, I was lucky enough to sit in with 3Men2Souls for another of their podcasts earlier this month. We had a great time trying to figure out how the multiverse theory allows us to blame all possible problems on our friend Nick Brodie, as well as cracking each other up to no end. I don’t think we really discussed anything, but damn was it ever fun. You can find it, and many more of their episodes, here.
Next, The Rifter #64 is now available for pre-order on Palladium Books’ website! My story ‘A Cold Night, Dead Past’ will feature in this issue, and I couldn’t be more excited. Working with the fine folks at Palladium like Wayne Smith, as well as the legendary Kevin Siembedia, is a dream come true. I’ll post another update when the issue ships, but you can order yours now here!
I’ll be attending the Detroit Fanfare convention in Dearborn, MI this weekend (Oct. 26-7), so if you’re in the area send me an email and maybe I’ll see you there! Look for the Palladium Books booth, since I’ll most likely be nearby kissing Siembedia’s feet.
Finally, there’s a few new posts incoming over the next few weeks. I have a lot of work ahead of me and behind me, meaning sporadic updates are the name of the game right now. However, I’m really excited about some of the projects I’m currently working on, and can’t wait to share more of them with you as they develop. For now, I’ll just say that over the next month or so I’m tentatively planning to include:
Hello everyone,
My short story ‘A Cold Night, Dead Past’ will be published in the next issue of The Rifter by Palladium Books!
A gritty sci-fi piece taking place in the rich setting of Rifts, the post-apocalyptic role-playing game from Palladium, this story revolves around a cyborg headhunter named Frost in the ruins of old Quebec City, now simply known as Old Bones.
Featured with the story is artwork by the amazing Chuck Walton, whose rendition of the main character is absolutely incredible! I’m absolutely blown away by the work he’s done to bring Frost to life. You can view his work here.
I’m very happy to be working with Palladium Books, and I’ll have future updates with more details as they happen! Stay tuned!
