Egon: I’m worried, Ray. It’s getting crowded in there and all my data points to something big on the horizon.
Winston: What do you mean, big?
Egon: Well, let’s say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of psychokinetic energy in the New York area. Based on this morning’s sample, it would be a Twinkie… thirty-five feet long, weighing approximately six hundred pounds.Ghostbusters, 1984
In 2012, I wrote a feature-length screenplay titled Ghostbusters 3. Originally, it was a gift for my dad. We had been discussing the ‘what-if’ of a Ghostbusters sequel for years. But as I started to work on it, the script really took on a life of its own (I am aware of the irony).
I spent the better part of 2013 and early 2014 trying to get it into Dan Aykroyd’s hands, and actually succeeded by infiltrating a pair of covert operatives into a Royal Ontario Museum benefit and passing it along on a USB drive. But after the announcement of Paul Feig’s reboot, the script became a permanent ‘what-if.’
Unlike the 2016 reboot, this is a direct sequel that would feature the original cast reprising their roles and follow the story of Oscar Barrett, Sigourney Weaver’s baby from Ghostbusters 2. Due to tough ‘spectral rights’ lobbying blocking paranormal research, Oscar struggles to covertly study the banned subject with his post-grad friends Gina and Richard until the death of his ‘uncle’ Peter Venkman and the emergence of an ancient evil spark a series of events that threaten to overwhelm the new generation of Ghostbusters and the entire planet.
It’s available for free on Scribd, and the original can probably be found gathering lint at the bottom of a cupholder in one of Dan Aykroyd’s cars.
