Flash Fiction – r/WritingPrompts Killer Extravaganza

Hello!

I wanted to put up something a little different after all the recent sci-fi,  so I went over to Reddit’s writing prompt subreddit and found this little doozy:

“A hitchhiker murderer picks up a murderous hitchhiker.”

One thing I love about these flash fiction prompts is how quickly they can flow out of you. I put this together in very little time, but with a strong and simple concept like the one above there wasn’t a lot of agonizing over where to go next. It’s a lot of fun, and if you want to do your own there’s no reason it has to be as long as this one.

Here’s my entry – and here’s a link to the Reddit thread so you can upvote my comment!

Hunting Ground

For this post, I’m sharing a submission I sent in for a contest last year, related to a Warhammer 40,000 game produced by Games Workshop and Behaviour Interactive. It wasn’t accepted, which is fine (and the bald patches from tearing my hair out have almost filled in, so that’s great) but I figure it’s something that might appeal to my readers, whether you know the game or not. New Flash Fiction: Butterfly Icarus

Ready for another flash fiction challenge?

Now that the move back to Toronto is all well and done, I can relax on one of my two pieces of furniture and do another writing prompt. June kind of came and went, didn’t leave a lot of time for anything but the day job and the move. It’s been taxing, but I don’t know if cross-country moving is ever easy without wealth.

But now I’m ready to get back to business, which means another story with the Trese Brothers to follow No Legacy Between The Stars – but beginning with this new short story.

Anyways, I went hunting for a writing prompt and found this thread on Reddit. The post is there, so click the link if you want the context of the challenge before reading the story. Otherwise, it follows here.

Enjoy!

Flash Fiction Jealousy Prompt – New Material

What’s this? Another post, so soon?

One thing that I’m going for now is a bit more consistency in my posts. It might not be the same length of a post I might do for Huffington Post or a flash fiction contest. With all of my current projects and responsibilities, I don’t really have enough time left over for that. But if you’re interested in little injections of what’s floating around my head every fortnight or so, I think I can maintain that at a modest level of quality.

This is flash fiction, written for a challenge a couple of months ago. The prompt was ‘Jealousy.’ Stuff like this could be more frequent additions to this blog, feel free to leave challenges or prompts in the comments and I’ll see what I can whip up for another update!

I’ll take one more opportunity to let you know about my eBook release of No Legacy Between The Stars with Trese Brothers Games. Check out the interview on their blog along with links to the various markets where the story is for sale.

Read on for the story!

Will The Tide Ever Come In?

I’ve been making some new friends out here. The other day someone asked if I’d be interested in joining a writing circle; after leaving behind the old Writer’s Bloc in Toronto I was happy to give it a try. It’ll be neat to have some people to bounce ideas off of, work on copy with. I can’t wait to get started.

My first assignment is to write something not more than 48 lines containing the following words:

The Wild Hunt, Part III

part two here.

Resisting the urge to roll her eyes, Jaima shifted slightly against her chair, feeling the whisper of fur across her neck. The heavy pelt she had draped over her shoulders warded off both the evening’s chill and the worst of Macabe’s melodramatic performance. Looking around, she could see that most of the people sharing her fire were considerably more entranced with the old man’s well-paced storytelling. She had to admit, he knew how to hold a captive audience; she also had to admit that she was more than a little interested, too.

The Wild Hunt, Part II

part one here.

Jaima pushed the water cart from one small cluster of people to another, slowly making her way across the smooth concrete plane of the rooftop. The sun had already set, the grey stone screening the dancing shadows of the villagers amidst the orange glow of their fires. Night was coming earlier and earlier as winter approached, but the cheerful blazes pushed back the gloom of the cold season. She filled tin cups and glass bottles alike from a carafe, a peaceful smile on her face. The thankful nods of her elders warmed her heart even as the small flames they gathered around warmed their old bones. Her village was lucky; in some places, people didn’t live nearly as long as they usually did in Old Town.

The Wild Hunt, Part I

The Wild Hunt

by Brett Caron

Three knocks at the door announced that the hunters had returned. Jaima’s heart began to beat faster. They had been gone too long; the sun had almost set. She had to make sure. Her back to the dingy apartment, she could hear the rest of her group in the other room. Green walls had turned a grey brown in the late afternoon light and faint moisture stains traced pathways down from the ceiling, black veins descending from dark wood. The bare hardwood floors hardly spoke under her passage as she silently padded across the room on soft soles and put her ear to the cold metal surface.
